This policy covers NoLight: Black Screen Camera for iOS, published by Sang Cao.
The short version
NoLight has no accounts, no server of its own, and no analytics. Your recordings, photos, notes and settings are stored on your device, inside the app. Nothing is sent anywhere unless you deliberately export or share it.
That is not a promise about future apps or about the website — it is a description of this app, and it is checkable: the app contains no analytics SDK and makes no network requests of its own.
What NoLight stores on your device
- Recordings and photos you capture, kept inside the app’s own storage rather than in your Photos library. They go to Photos only when you tap Save to Photos.
- Notes you write in Workspace.
- Web browsing data from the Workspace browser — cookies, local storage and history, handled by Apple’s WebKit exactly as they would be in any browser. The normal space and Vault keep separate browsing data.
- App settings: camera choice, resolution, microphone on or off, background colour, and how you leave the dark screen.
- In the device Keychain: a hash of your Vault PIN — never the PIN itself — and two small counters described under Purchases below. Keychain items can outlive deleting an app, so reinstalling does not necessarily reset them. Neither item identifies you.
What NoLight does not collect
No location. No contacts. No advertising identifier. No device fingerprint. No crash or usage reporting. No account, email address or name — there is nothing to sign in to.
The app has no analytics service and no backend, so there is no place for such data to arrive even if it were collected.
Permissions, and what each one is for
- Camera — to record video and take photos that you start yourself.
- Microphone — to record sound alongside video. You can turn it off, and the app records silently when you do.
- Add to Photos — used only when you choose Save to Photos. NoLight never reads your photo library.
- Face ID — to unlock Vault. Face ID and Touch ID are handled by iOS; the app is told only whether the check passed, and biometric data never reaches it.
Declining any of these leaves the rest of the app working.
Vault
Vault is an optional second space inside NoLight, unlocked with Face ID or a PIN you choose. Recordings, notes and browsing kept in Vault stay separate from the rest of the app — the same idea as the Hidden album in Photos, or a Face ID–locked folder in Notes.
Its purpose is to keep your own material from someone else picking up your unlocked phone. It is stored on your device like everything else, and it changes nothing about how recording is indicated on screen.
Purchases
If you buy NoLight Pro, the purchase is handled entirely by Apple through the App Store. NoLight never sees your payment details, billing address or Apple Account, and it never receives them afterwards.
Two things are stored locally as a result:
- Whether the purchase is active, so the app knows what to unlock. This is read from the transaction Apple provides on the device.
- The version your Apple Account first downloaded, which Apple supplies to the app, so that people who installed NoLight while it was entirely free keep those features. It is a version number, not an identifier for you.
Refunds are handled by Apple, not by us. Apple’s own privacy policy covers everything that happens on their side of a purchase.
The Workspace browser
Sites you open in Workspace are ordinary websites and collect whatever their own policies say they collect. NoLight neither reads nor transmits what you browse; it has no way to see it.
Deleting your data
Delete individual recordings and photos in Gallery, and notes in Notes. Deleting the app removes its stored content from your device.
Because there are no servers and no backups on our side, there is nothing for us to delete on your behalf, and nothing for us to hand over or restore. If your only copy of a recording is on the phone and the phone is lost, the recording is gone.
Copies you exported yourself — to Photos, to Files, or through Share — live wherever you put them and are outside this app.
Children
NoLight is rated 17+ and is not directed at children. It collects nothing, so there is no child’s data to remove; if you believe a child has shared something with us by email, use the address below and we will delete it.
Changes to this policy
If the app’s behaviour changes, this page changes with it, and the date at the top moves. Material changes will also be described in the app’s release notes rather than only here.
