If you are reporting a problem with a recording, it helps a lot to say roughly how long you were recording, and what interrupted it if anything — a phone call, low battery, the app being force-quit.

How does the dark screen work?

NoLight stays open and in the foreground the whole time you are recording. It sets the screen brightness to zero and draws a plain dark view, so the phone does not light up the room around you. The display itself never switches off, and the app never leaves the foreground.

Double-tap anywhere on the dark screen to bring it back without stopping the recording. From version 1.1 you can change that to a triple tap or a press and hold, in Settings → Black Screen → Exit with. Whichever you pick, the dark screen prints the instruction on itself, so the way out is never hidden.

Where are my recordings and photos saved?

Inside the app, on your device — not automatically in your Photos library. Open the Gallery tab to find everything you have recorded. From there you can save a copy to Photos, or share and export a file whenever you want.

Can NoLight record in the background, or while my phone is locked?

No. iOS does not allow it for any third-party app, and NoLight does not try to work around it. Recording happens only while the app is open in front of you.

Can an iPhone record video with the screen off? explains why the operating system works this way, and what a dark screen does instead.

Can the recording indicator be turned off?

No. Whenever NoLight is recording, an on-screen indicator is visible on every tab and on the dark screen. There is no setting and no gesture that hides it. That is deliberate, not an oversight.

I stopped a recording from another tab — did it save?

Yes. Recording continues no matter which tab you are on, and the Stop button on the floating recording bar finalises the file exactly the way stopping from the Camera tab does. Check the Gallery tab to confirm.

What is Vault?

An optional second space inside NoLight, unlocked with Face ID or a PIN you choose, for recordings, photos, notes and browsing you want kept apart from the rest of the app. It works like the Hidden album in Photos, or a Face ID–locked folder in Notes: it protects your own material from someone else picking up your unlocked phone.

Turning Vault on changes nothing about how recording is indicated.

Camera or microphone permission problems

If you declined camera or microphone access the first time you were asked, iOS will not ask again. Open iPhone Settings → NoLight and turn them back on. NoLight also links straight to that screen from inside the app when it notices a permission is off.

A recording looks shorter than expected, or will not play

This is rare. NoLight writes video in short fragments as it goes, so an interrupted session should still leave a playable file that simply ends early rather than a file nothing can open.

If you hit either problem, email the details above and we will look into it. How to record a long video on iPhone without losing the file covers the other things that end a long session early — storage, heat, battery and interruptions.

Purchases and restoring

NoLight Pro is a one-time purchase, not a subscription — nothing renews.

If you have bought it and a device does not show it, tap Restore at the foot of the purchase screen; purchases are tied to your Apple Account. If you downloaded NoLight while it was entirely free, you keep those features at no cost.

Refunds go through Apple rather than through us, using the App Store’s own refund process.
