Black screen camera apps for iPhone: what to check first

CategoriesiOS

A black screen camera app does one job the iPhone Camera app does not: it keeps recording while the screen goes dark, so a phone held up through a concert, a lecture or a rehearsal does not light up the room around you.

The idea is simple, and most of these apps look alike in a screenshot. Where they differ is in the details you only find out an hour into a recording. Here is what to check before you choose one.

What every one of them can and cannot do

Every black screen camera app on iPhone works the same way underneath. The app stays open in the foreground, turns the display brightness down and draws a dark view over its own interface. The camera keeps running because the app never leaves the screen.

That sets limits no app can get around:

  • It cannot record while the phone is locked.
  • It cannot keep recording if you switch to another app.
  • iOS still shows its green camera dot in the status bar.

The reasons are in Can an iPhone record video with the screen off? An app that promises more than this is describing something iOS does not allow.

1. Does the recording indicator stay on the dark screen?

App Store Guideline 2.5.14 requires a clear indication whenever an app records. A compliant app keeps a visible mark on the dark screen — a dot, the word REC, a timer — and has no setting that removes it. An option to switch that mark off is not a feature worth having.

2. How do you bring the screen back?

In a dark room you will not be looking at the phone. Check that there is a simple gesture that works anywhere on the screen, and that the dark screen tells you which gesture it is. Feeling around for a small button in the dark is how recordings get stopped by accident.

3. What happens when the free part runs out?

Most of these apps can be tried for free with a limit. What matters is what the limit stops. An app where the screen simply comes back on while the recording carries on is a very different thing from one where the recording itself ends. Find out before the lecture, not during it.

4. Does a long recording survive a crash?

A 90-minute recording is 90 minutes of exposure to an app crash, a force quit or a flat battery. If the app holds the video open as a single file until you press stop, a bad ending can leave a file that will not play. Apps that write the video in short segments leave a playable file up to the moment it stopped. There is more on this in How to record a long video on iPhone without losing the file.

5. What does it do when storage runs low?

Long recordings are large, and 4K takes several times the space of 1080p. A good app warns you while there is still room and stops cleanly before the storage is gone, instead of failing at the end with nothing saved.

6. Where do the recordings go?

Some apps save straight to Photos; others keep recordings inside the app and let you export them. Neither is wrong, but know which you are getting. Recordings kept inside an app go with it if you delete the app.

7. One purchase, or a subscription?

This kind of app is mostly sold as a one-time purchase. For a tool you might use a few times a month, a subscription deserves a second look.

How NoLight answers each of these

NoLight is the black screen camera I built. Against the same seven questions:

  1. Indicator. While the screen is dark, a dot and the word REC stay on screen with the way back out. No setting turns them off.
  2. Screen back. Double-tap anywhere on the dark screen. Triple tap, or press and hold, can be chosen in Settings instead, and the dark screen shows whichever one is set.
  3. Free limit. The free version records video and photos with no time limit and includes 10 minutes of dark screen in total. When those run out, the screen comes back on and the recording keeps going.
  4. Crashes. Video is written in five-second fragments, so an interrupted session still leaves a playable file.
  5. Storage. It will not start a recording with less than about a minute of space left, warns when fewer than five minutes remain, and stops on its own before the space runs out.
  6. Where files go. Recordings are saved on the device, inside the app. Saving a copy to Photos is always free.
  7. Price. NoLight Pro is a single purchase — US$14.99 in the US — not a subscription. It adds unlimited dark screen, Workspace while a recording runs, 4K, export to Files, Vault and a coloured dark screen.

Record responsibly

A dark screen is for the people sitting around you, so the phone does not light up their evening. It does not change who is allowed to be recorded. Recording people who have not agreed to it is governed differently from place to place, and venues set their own rules. Ask first.

Short answers

What is a black screen camera app? An iPhone app that keeps recording video while its screen goes dark, so the phone does not light up the room.

Does it work with the phone locked? No. No app can record video while an iPhone is locked.

Does the recording indicator stay on? It should. iOS shows its green camera dot, and a compliant app keeps its own recording mark on the dark screen.

Is a dark screen easier on the battery? On iPhones with OLED displays, a mostly black screen draws less power than a bright viewfinder. The camera and the video encoder still use what they use.
