“Dual Space” and “2Accounts” are familiar names from Android, where apps with those names run a second copy of your apps. On the iPhone App Store both names are used by whole groups of apps from different developers — search either and you get a page of near-identical titles. Neither is one product, so the useful question is not which one to install but what the category can do at all.
What “Dual Space” means on iPhone
On Android, Dual Space-style apps run a real second instance of an app. iOS does not allow that: an app cannot copy another app or run a second instance of it. Dual apps on iPhone explains why.
So the iPhone apps with that name work differently. Their listings typically promise to run multiple accounts of messaging and social apps side by side, often bundled with extras such as a locked photo gallery, locked notes or a private browser.
In practice, a second account of a service inside an iPhone app runs through that service’s website, in a separate web session. That can be genuinely useful — but it is not a copy of the app, and reviews in this category regularly come from people who expected one.
Before you subscribe to any of them
- Does the listing say how it works? An honest one explains that accounts run as websites.
- Which services really work? Some services limit their web version on phones.
- What happens to notifications? Web sessions generally do not receive push notifications.
- What does it cost, and how often? This is the one that catches people. Weekly subscriptions are common here, and a small weekly number is the most expensive shape of pricing there is. Check the renewal period before the price.
- Where is your data kept? On the phone, or on the developer’s servers? Check the privacy label on the listing.
Dual Space alternatives for iPhone
1. The app’s own account switching — free
Instagram, X, TikTok, Telegram, Gmail and Outlook support more than one account inside the app, with notifications for each. If the service you care about is one of them, you may not need anything else.
2. Safari profiles — free
Since iOS 17, Safari can hold several profiles, each with its own cookies and history, so you can be signed in to the same website as different people. There is no lock, and nothing outside Safari is separated. What Safari profiles actually separate has the details.
3. SideSpace — separate Spaces
SideSpace is the app I built, and it takes the website route openly: it runs services in isolated web sessions, does not clone or modify any app, and is not affiliated with the services you add. What it adds is structure:
- several Spaces, each with its own web sessions, pinned web apps and browser;
- each Space’s own notes, and photos and videos kept out of your Photos library;
- with SideSpace Premium, Private Spaces that stay unlisted until you unlock them with Face ID or a passcode;
- a proxy per Space, if you need one.
It is free with two Spaces. Premium — unlimited Spaces, Private Spaces and a camera that saves straight into a Space — is $2.99 a month, $19.99 a year with a seven-day free trial, or $39.99 once in the US. Everything a Space holds stays on the phone; there is no SideSpace server.
4. A second device
For a messaging app that has no usable website on a phone and allows one account per install, a second phone is still the only way to use both accounts with every feature.
