Can an iPhone record video in the background?

CategoriesiOS

No. On iPhone, video recording stops the moment the app doing it leaves the screen — whether you swipe home, switch to another app or lock the phone. That is true for Apple’s Camera app and for every app on the App Store.

If you have seen apps described as background video recorders, they are describing something narrower. It is worth knowing what, before you rely on one for an hour.

What happens when you leave the app

Camera capture on iPhone runs inside the app that started it, and only while that app is on screen. As soon as it moves to the background, iOS interrupts the capture session and takes the camera away. Audio is different: iOS lets audio apps keep running in the background, which is why Voice Memos keeps recording on a locked phone. There is no equivalent permission for video.

So when you swipe home in the middle of a recording:

  • The Camera app stops and saves the clip.
  • A well-built third-party app does the same: it finishes the file straight away, so nothing recorded so far is lost.
  • A carelessly built one can leave a file that will not open, because it never closed it.

What “background recorder” apps actually do

Apps sold as background video recorders usually do one of three things:

  1. Keep the app open with a dark screen. The app is still in front; the display just is not showing a viewfinder. This is real and useful, and it is what black screen camera apps do.
  2. Put other tools inside the app. A browser or notes inside the recording app, so you can do something else without leaving it. Recording continues because you never left.
  3. Record audio only. Audio can run in the background. Video cannot.

None of them records video while you use other apps. Can an iPhone record video with the screen off? goes through the system side in more detail.

Things that end a recording even if you stay in the app

Leaving the app is not the only thing that stops a video:

  • Auto-Lock. If the phone locks itself, the recording stops. A recording app should keep the phone awake while it records; the Camera app does.
  • An incoming call. A phone call takes over the audio and usually ends the recording.
  • Heat and storage. A phone that gets too hot, or runs out of space, stops recording.

What works instead

You need to do something else while filming. Use an app that brings that something inside itself. In NoLight, Workspace has a web browser, notes and a clock, and a floating control — REC, Dark screen, Stop — stays on every tab while the recording runs. Using Workspace during a recording is part of NoLight Pro.

You only need the sound. Use Voice Memos. It keeps recording with the phone locked, and the files are far smaller than video.

You want the phone out of the way. Put it in a stand and record with the screen dark, so it won’t light up the room, and leave it in the recording app.

Short answers

Can an iPhone record video while I use another app? No. Video capture stops when the recording app leaves the screen.

Can it record video while locked? No. Only audio apps keep recording on a locked iPhone.

Why do some apps say they record in the background? They usually mean a dark screen with the app still open, or tools inside the app. Both keep the app in front.

Will I lose the video if I swipe out by accident? In the Camera app, no — the clip is saved. In another app it depends on whether the app finishes the file as you leave; NoLight saves everything recorded up to that moment.
